I always struggle knowing how to celebrate the 4th of July. My family doesn’t love parades (too hot). We always do a BBQ but often we don’t do ANYTHING patriotic!
I decided to do a real American 4th of July Party this year for my family and my sister thought of the most amazing activity idea– a themed water fight! After all, the 4th of July is a celebration of the victory of the Revolutionary War.
And you get to learn a little about the Revolutionary War by taking part in the games.
Boston Tea Party
American Colonists are angry because the British taxes on tea are extremely high. Colonists have tried to get representation in Parliament with no success. Boston finally gets fed up and dumps all the British tea into the harbor. This is one of the main incidents leading to the Revolutionary War.
The Red Coats want to get their tea (red balloons) into the Boston Harbor. The Patriots don’t want to have the tea in Boston. The game is to see if the Red Coats can get the ‘tea’ into ‘Boston’.
Fill 50 red water balloons with water. Have the Red Coat team (we chose to do the adults–bigger stronger but less passionate) wear a red arm band and the Patriots (kids-crazy passionate about everything) wear a blue arm band. The Reds have to sneak into the blue zone and put the red water balloon safely in a bucket without being shot (with water guns or blue balloons). If they get shot, then they have to return to their side. Game lasts for 10 minute intervals. If the red team gets 15 balloons in, then they win.
Battles of Lexington and Concord
The British heard that the Patriots were storing ammunition/supplies in Concord. They were ordered to get them. But the Patriots heard that the location had been leaked to the British and moved the supplies. As the British marched to Concord, they were first fired upon in Lexington. But the militia was outnumbered by the British and fell back. The British marched toward Concord. In Concord, there was a battle with 400 Patriots and 100 British. The British fell back and started to return to Boston. The British were under fire the whole way back.
Divide the yard in half. The Blue team hides their ammunition (Blue flag or fabric scrap) somewhere. The Red Team has to find the ammunition. Blue team tries to defend. If a red team member is hit with a water balloon or gun, he/she has to stay out of the game for 1 minute. The game goes for 10 minutes or until the Red team finds the ammunition.
Battle of Bunker Hill
The British were coming and the Patriots prepared to defend Breed’s hill (aka should have been Bunker hill but at last minute they decided on the smaller Breeds hill). They didn’t have a lot of ammunition so their commander told them not to fire until they saw “the whites” of the English’s eyes. When the British got close enough, the Patriots fired well and sent the British into retreat. The British regrouped and came again only to be sent into another retreat. Now the Patriots were low on ammunition and when the British came again, the Patriots had to retreat. But this Battle gave the Patriots confidence that they could be successful if they had the right tools.
So now we get to see if the Patriots can beat those British in 21st century.
Divide a yard in half and if there is a higher ground, the Patriots get this area. Give the Blue Team 3/4 as many water balloons as the Red. Start the game on “Go”. The British have to get up the ‘Hill’ or cross over the line without being hit by a blue water balloon. If they get hit, then they are dead. The Patriots have to defend the line, but if they are hit with a red balloon, they are also dead. If the majority of red players get across without being hit, they win.
Battle of Yorktown
The battle of Yorktown. The British general Cornwallis chose Yorktown to make base at the same time as the French (Patriot’s ally) chose to come into the the Yorktown bay. So the French blocked the British by sea and Washington had his troops block them by land creating a siege. Then, they bombarded them with cannon and artillery for 3 weeks until they surrendered. And the Patriots won the war!
Red team gets in the middle. Blue team goes all around. Pound each other with water balloons and guns. Whenever water balloons run out, the game ends. Which ever team is the wettest are the losers.
